Together in the Mystery offers a year-long training program for experienced spiritual directors who want to participate in supervisor training and to discern a call to supervise both other directors and those in spiritual direction training programs.

We believe that spiritual direction supervision, is an invitation to participate in the Mystery of God, which is why we’ve chosen Rublev’s Holy Trinity as our primary image. For us, this icon represents another trinity as well, that of a supervisor and spiritual director gathered in service to a directee.

What is Supervision?

Spiritual directors seek supervision as they attempt to grow in their ability to notice and respond to God’s presence during their spiritual direction practice. Supervisors help spiritual directors

• celebrate their strengths
• develop their felt sense of the dimensions of human experience
• identify what opens them to God's presence and what distracts them during sessions
• hone skills that need improvement
• gain further understanding of the ways in which they relate to directees
• discuss consultation questions
• think with a another director about questions that arise regarding the nature and practice of spiritual direction

Note:  Spiritual Directors International's Code of Ethics mandates that all spiritual directors participate in supervision.


What are the Traits of a Good Supervisor?

Empathy.  Compassion.  A contemplative nature.  Sensitivity to data from body, mind, and emotions.  Faith.  Excellent direction skills. Precision in listening and speaking.  Strong boundaries.  Memory of what it’s like not to know.  Psychological balance.  Patience.  A teachable spirit.  Sound judgment.  A sense of humor.
